Hotel Snapshot
California’s Central Coast has been calling roadtrippers for decades. The dramatic cliffs, wide swaths of sand, and drumming Pacific make it a stunning backdrop for a leisurely drive. And if, like me, you find yourself looking for a place to spend a few nights while driving between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Carmel might call your name.
While the quaint seaside town is certainly worth a few hours for shopping and gallery hopping, for a truly relaxed stay away from any hustle and bustle, drive a few miles inland to Carmel Valley Ranch.
Design & Character
The sprawling hotel sits on 500 acres of rolling hills. The suites (yes, the property only has suites) surround a popular golf course, and an expansive trail network extends far beyond the central buildings. The anchor, where you’ll check in and deposit your bags to be golf carted up to your suite, houses a welcome center, cafe, and the hotel restaurant, Valley Kitchen.
The Rooms
The hotel has 181 suites, all of which have a fireplace and a private deck, many overlooking the golf course or Carmel Valley. Many of the single-bedroom studio suites have special amenities like an outdoor tub. A one-bed suite was perfect for my family of three.
The larger rooms, which can sleep up to five, have plenty of space for larger families and groups of friends.
When you’re not relaxing in your room, there’s plenty to explore on the property. Hike a few minutes up the hill to The Corral to visit with goats, cows, and alpacas. Continue past the farm into a vast network of trails, or head to the base of the property for the fitness center and pools.
Food & Drink
Valley Kitchen offers a laid-back space for breakfast and lunch. Menu highlights include thick malted Belgian waffles for those who wake up with a sweet tooth, as well as loaded omelettes and breakfast burritos. For lunch, expect golf club fare like a stacked grilled chicken sandwich with bacon, avocado, and chipotle mayo, as well as an array of tacos and colorful salads.
Dinner is a more elevated affair in the restaurant, especially if you dine in the back room with a view of the golf course and, if you’re lucky, the sunset. The chef’s menu rotates seasonally and includes American classics like buttermilk fried chicken and New York strip alongside elote and ceviche.
A kid’s menu is always available, and the chef will even whip up a vegetable or fruit puree for babies.
Amenities
Whether you want to hit the ball on the tennis or pickleball court, swim laps, splash around with your kids, or get in some strength training, there’s something for everyone at the River Ranch. The poolside snack bar is a great place to grab lunch or smoothies, and there’s even a dedicated playroom for kids full of books, games, and toys. Golfers can spend the day on the links or take a private or group lesson at the Golf Academy.
Spa & Wellness
The property also has an expansive spa with standard offerings like massages and facials, including hydrafacials, as well as some specialty services like sleep wellness hypno health sessions.
The beauty of a sprawling property like Canyon Valley Ranch is that you don’t have to get in a car for entertainment, meals, or relaxation.
Location & Neighborhood Recs
From morning hikes to afternoon swims to golf lessons and visits to the on-site apiary, you can easily spend several days enjoying the property. Of course, if you get the itch to explore more of the region, the stunning California coast is a short drive away.
